If you are in that stage of your motherhood that you get to start looking at options for maternity and newborn photography- congrats to you! You are probably like me, and have scoured facebook groups and made your own post asking for suggestions on who to use. Unfortunately, that usually leaves you with 100 or more comments of photographers tagging their business page and saying “would love to chat!” Yikes- now you’re even more overwhelmed than before you asked.
Here are my top tips on how to find the right (and best!) photographer for you and your new baby-
1. Investment- First and foremost, you need to know what you can afford. Everyone has their own budget and there’s nothing wrong with that. Be clear and upfront when looking on how much you are able and willing to spend on your images and that will narrow down your search for you already. Have no fear- there is a photographer out there for every budget! And none of us are looking for “arms and legs” as payment
2. Style- What do you envision your baby’s first photos to look like? This will help narrow your search- are you hoping for a Fresh 48 sesh in the hospital after birth while you still have the tiniest little details? Posed and wrapped studio vibes? Lifestyle studio vibes? Or maybe in-home when you’re cozy and comfy in your own environment. None of these options are better than the other- it’s all up to you and what you want as a reminder of you tinniest family member
3. Products- Are you looking for a full digital gallery to share on you social media? Prints and albums? Not everyone offers the same goodies when booking so be sure to ask what you get out of this 🙂
4. Personality and Experience- This one os SO IMPORTANT! Please take extra special care when deciding who to trust when placing your brand new little babe in the hands of someone else. You want someone who is highly professional and experienced and specializes in keeping you and your newborn safe and comfortable during your photos.
5. Location- Last, because I think this is least important, is location. I personally drove 3 hours one way for my own newborn photos because it’s worth going to the right person. However- if your vibe is hospital or home based, you don’t necessarily need to choose your “local” photographer, just someone who is able to travel to you. Now, that may tie in to knowing your budget and if your photographer charges for travel fees, but many of us here in Maine will come right to you unless you’re searching for studio based images.
So there you have it, momma! My best tips on finding your very best photographer for those precious newborn photos.
